Our Story

Why we opened North Star

We opened North Star after helping our own family search for senior housing. The choices came down to a house that had become too much work or a large complex that felt like an institution, and we believed families deserved something better.

So we built it: a real home where a small group of independent seniors each have a private room, share dinner at one table, and leave the chores to us. Our family owns and runs North Star, and when you call, you reach us.

The Home

Six private rooms in one well-kept house

Every resident has a private bedroom in a single-family home on a quiet residential street. The shared spaces are the heart of the house: a full kitchen, a dining room with one big table, a comfortable living room, and a covered porch.

Private Rooms

Bring your own furniture or use ours. Each room has a large window, a closet, handrails, and plenty of space to make it feel like your own. We take care of the linens, the towels, and the laundry.

Shared Living Spaces

One big table where everyone gathers for meals, an open sitting room with a fireplace for cards and good conversation, and a kitchen that stays open for coffee and a snack. Wide, uncluttered walkways connect it all.

Porch & Yard

A covered front porch made for morning coffee, a level walkway to the door, and a well-kept lawn and garden beds that someone else takes care of. Lighting along the paths keeps evenings easy to navigate.

The Neighborhood

A quiet street in a friendly town

The home is on a quiet residential street in Crown Point, Indiana. Crown Point gives residents a small-town pace with everything close at hand, and it keeps the drive short for the people who visit most.

Minutes from care

Franciscan Health Crown Point, a full-service hospital, is a short drive from the house, along with the doctors, dentists, and pharmacies that keep appointments easy.

An easy town to love

Crown Point is built around its historic courthouse square, with shops, restaurants, groceries, banks, and churches nearby for errands and outings.

Simple for family to visit

The home sits close to I-65 and US 30, an easy drive from across Northwest Indiana and about an hour from Chicago, so visits fit into everyday life.

Fresh & Nutritious

Home cooking, every single day

Every meal at North Star comes from our own kitchen. We cook three meals a day right in the house, so it smells like fresh breakfast in the morning and a warm dinner in the evening.

Everyone gathers around one table, and mealtimes are unhurried, social, and the heart of each day. Between meals, the kitchen stays open for coffee, fruit, and snacks whenever residents would like them.

We plan our menus around what our residents genuinely enjoy, and we happily accommodate dietary needs and personal preferences.

Daily Life

An ordinary, good day

Residents are never tied to a schedule here, and everyone comes and goes as they please. Still, most days settle into a comfortable rhythm that looks something like this.

  1. 7:30 am

    Coffee on the porch

The coffee pot goes on early. Early risers head for the porch, and late sleepers are never disturbed.

  2. 8:30 am

    Breakfast together

A hot breakfast at the big table, where the day's plans usually get sorted out.

  3. Morning

    Errands, garden, visitors

Grocery runs and appointments, a little time in the garden, or a visit from the grandkids. Family is welcome any time.

  4. 12:30 pm

    Lunch

Something warm and simple, shared together or enjoyed on your own schedule.

  5. Afternoon

    Cards, walks, quiet time

Euchre has a standing table, the walking group makes its loop around the neighborhood, and quiet time is always honored.

  6. 6:00 pm

    Dinner as a household

The highlight of our day: one table, real cooking, and unhurried conversation.

  7. Evening

    Wind down

A favorite show in the living room, a good book, or a phone call with family. We lock up for the night and leave the porch light on.

Independent Living, Honestly

What we are, and what we are not

Families deserve a straight answer about whether a home is the right fit. North Star is an independent living residence only, and we want to be upfront about exactly what that means.

North Star is

  • An independent living residence for seniors who manage their own daily routines
  • A private room plus meals, housekeeping, laundry, and utilities in one rate
  • A small household with daily company and a family that runs the home
  • A good fit for someone who's healthy but tired of living alone or keeping up a house

North Star is not

  • A licensed assisted living, nursing, or memory care facility
  • A provider of personal care, bathing assistance, or medication administration
  • A medical setting, since we do not provide health care of any kind
  • The right fit for someone who needs daily hands-on care

If a resident's needs change over time, families are welcome to arrange outside services, such as a visiting home health provider, right here in our home. If a licensed care setting ever becomes the right choice, we will help you plan a smooth transition. Above all, we would rather tell you honestly at the tour whether North Star is the right fit for your loved one.

Questions Families Ask

FAQ

Who is a good fit for North Star?

Seniors who can manage their own daily routines, including dressing, bathing, and medications, but no longer want the work or the quiet of living alone. Our typical resident is independent, enjoys good company, and is more than ready to retire from mowing the lawn.

What does the monthly rate include?

The private room, all utilities and Wi-Fi, three home-cooked meals a day plus snacks, weekly housekeeping, personal laundry and linens, home maintenance, and household activities. When you visit, ask us about current availability and rates. We keep our pricing simple and always put it in writing.

Can residents come and go? Can family visit?

Yes, and yes. This is your loved one's home. Residents keep their own schedules, continue driving if they drive, and go out whenever they like. Family and friends are welcome any day of the week. Stay for dinner and we will gladly set another place.

What happens if my loved one starts to need more help?

We are an independent living home, so we do not provide personal or medical care ourselves. If needs change, families can arrange outside services such as visiting home health, which we welcome in the home. If a licensed care setting ever becomes necessary, we will help you plan that move. Either way, your family will never navigate it alone.

Can we bring our own furniture?

Yes. Rooms can be furnished by us or by you. Most residents bring their own bed and a favorite chair, and we find it helps the room feel like theirs from the very first night.

Where in Crown Point is the home?

On a quiet residential street in Crown Point, close to Franciscan Health, the historic downtown square, and major roads like I-65 and US 30. Because North Star is a private home, we share the exact address when we confirm your visit.
